Financial institutions, businesses and government agencies turn in the contents of safe deposit boxes to the treasurer's office every year. These items are then turned over to the office's unclaimed property data base after no contact or document transaction with the owner for five years.
"It is the Treasurer’s Office policy to never sell or dispose of these medals—and it is a priority to return them to their rightful owners. I encourage Missourians to search the list and see if you recognize a name," Missouri Treasurer Scott Fitzpatric said in press release earlier this week.
A total of 233 medals and insignia are unclaimed. This includes five purple hearts, four bronze stars and 90 other service medals.
