Michigan is about to get hit with the first significant winter snowstorm of the season, according to the National Weather Service, which issued a hazardous weather warning for the eastern upper and northern lower parts of the state Friday.

The snowstorm is forecast to continue across the upper Midwest Friday. It will usher in enough cold air to create snow and strong winds, meaning we might see accumulating snow this weekend just about everywhere in the state, per the NWS.

"Much of the upper Midwest is under some sort of winter alert as the season's first significant snowfall is forecast," CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen said.

Though the Manistee area has a hazardous weather warning for the weekend, it’s not expected to be a big snowstorm for the rest of Michigan. It will rank as heavy snow at most of the snow belts. But even the far southeast, where warmth usually fights off early season snow, could have a few inches of snow, according to reporting by MLive

There could be minor accumulations of wet snow, up to an inch or two, Friday through Friday night, especially west of Interstate 75 in northwest lower Michigan away from the immediate shorelines of the Great Lakes. This may create locally slick roadways and pockets of reduced visibility leading to dangerous travel, according to the NWS.

For the Manistee area, periods of accumulating lake effect snow are possible Saturday through Monday. In addition, some freezing drizzle or light freezing rain is possible across parts of northern Michigan Saturday night into Sunday morning.

As for central Michigan, Midland has a chance of rain and snow showers Friday night, a chance of showers on Saturday and a chance of snow starting Saturday night and into Sunday. Midland residents won't see more than one inch of snow accumulation.

A chance of snow will arrive Sunday with light accumulations possible as temperatures hover in the upper 30s to near 40, according to the NWS.

Huron County is likely to see snow on Sunday with even less snow accumulation possible, less than a half-inch, according to the NWS detailed forecast.
