Lake County Historical Museum opens for the season

BALDWIN — Patrons and visitors stepped back in time as they entered the Lake County Historical Museum in Baldwin for the opening day of the 2022 season last Wednesday.

Exhibit rooms filled with area artifacts and historical points of interest took them for a trip through the many different eras, from times before white settlement with a display of Native American artifacts on loan, to the first white settlers and early communities, lumber days, and beyond.

In particular importance this year at the museum is the featuring 150 years of Baldwin history with its sesquicentennial, with community events planned throughout the year.

During the opening day, visitors from out of state even came to look up family history and enjoy a tour by docent Susie Bradford Tripp.

Tripp offered to let visitors explore themselves or be led on a tour, which she said takes about an hour with all the historical displays and information the museum has to offer.

Lake County Historical Museum President Bruce Micinski assists with research Wednesday, and helped a woman from out-of-state research her ancestors, the Manns, from Pinora Township. He said she was amazed by the history of her family she was able to find which she couldn't find elsewhere. He also directed her to local resources near Pinora Township, such as archives at the Chase Township Public Library and the Pinora Township Cemetery.

Micinski gave a shout-out to museum curator Jill Engelman and other volunteers who put new displays together, especially how they paid attention to lighting and space.

"They did a great job pulling everything together," he said.

Among fun new displays are a collection of Village of Baldwin advertising through the decades; "The Doctor is In," all about the history of physicians and healthcare in the county; the history of the Pere Marquette River; Lake County sheriffs; and more.

The museum is open from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, or by appointment, with the research library open Wednesdays at 915 N. Michigan Ave., Baldwin. To follow events throughout the year, please visit and like the Lake County Historical Museum Facebook page.
