Ilene Lillian (Young) Handley
BALDWIN - Ilene Lillian (Young) Handley, 92, of Baldwin, MI passed away peacefully Sunday, December 21, 2014. She was born November 2, 1922 in Phillip, South Dakota to parents Milton and Iola Bertha (Peterson) Young. She grew up on the family’s ranch and graduated as Salutatorian from Phillip High School in 1939. She attended Business College in Chillicothe, MO and went on to work as a secretary for several businesses.
Ilene married John “Jim” Robert Handley on April 14, 1945 and moved with him around the country for their jobs. She retired in 1980 from the position of private secretary to the management team of Ford Motor Company, Wixom, MI.
During their years residing downstate, Ilene and her husband made numerous trips to Lake County to fish the Pere Marquette River, eventually purchasing a riverside cottage there. Following her husband’s death in 1989 and her brother’s illness in 1994, Ilene moved to South Dakota to manage the family’s ranch. In 2004 she returned to Baldwin to live full time. She loved tending her flower gardens, feeding and watching the wild birds and animals as well as enjoying her two cats.
Ilene was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Benjamin Young, Hollis Young and Irwin Howard Young; one sister, Inez (Young) Bingham; and her husband John “Jim” Handley. She is survived by a sister Iola (Young) Luckham, 96, of Escondido, CA; several nieces, nephews and many friends.
Funeral services have been entrusted to Verdun Funeral Home, Baldwin. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, December 26, 2014 at Evergreen Cemetery, Lake Township. A memorial service is planned in the spring of 2015.
In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorials in Ilene’s name to the Lake County Historical Society for a public garden at the museum. Checks may be made to LCHS, PO Box 774, Baldwin, MI 49304.
