LUTHER — Handfuls of Purpose Community Food Pantry at Edgetts Wesleyan Church in Luther recently received a $3,500 donation from the Gerber Foundation.

Pastor Dan Miller said due to their size and location, he was quite surprised and honored when the foundation reached out to offer financial support.

The pantry has been in operation for ten years in one of the most rural areas in Lake County, serving residents of adjacent towns such as Tustin, Chase, Irons, and Leroy, as well as Luther. There is a big problem in the area with food insecurity due to issues such as lack of transportation, available grocery stores, and inflation. The cost of food continues to rise, creating hardship for many.

Edgetts Wesleyan Church partners with Feeding America to offer a food pantry twice a month that serves an average of 40 households and a mobile food truck every other month that serves about 100 households. They also offer extras such as toiletries and clothing that are donated.

Recent food shortages, however, have created issues for many pantries, with certain items, such as meat, frequently out of stock and jelly no longer available due to changes in the Food and Drug Administration.

“Some items are purchased out of pocket for the pantry, but we always try to purchase as economically as possible, such as canned vegetables and meat,” Miller said.

The pantry is completely funded by community donations and operated through volunteer hours and Pastor Dan takes the time to get to know the community and residents by visiting with each person that comes to the pantry and offers prayers of support.

The pantry is not able to deliver but volunteers are always willing to help and can be reached at 231-797-5124.

The pantry would like to extend a special thanks to the Gerber Foundation for helping the community and offering their support.
