Ground beef that's distributed under several different brand names is being recalled after an E. coli contamination was discovered.

Lakeside Refrigerated Services, based in Swedesboro, New Jersey, has 120,872 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O103, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced Monday.

Some of the brands the meat appears under include Nature's Reserve, Thomas Farms, Weis and Marketside. Products were produced between Feb. 1 and April 8. The recalled brands are sold at major and local grocers including Walmart, Whole Foods, Target, Winn-Dixie and Weis.

FSIS came upon the issue during routine testing of imported products. Yet there have been no confirmed reports of illness. Clinical laboratories do not test for the toxin that produces E. coli, according to the USDA's media release, including the O103 organism, because it is harder to identify than the O157:H7 organism.

Illness can still stem from STECs within two to eight days (on average three to four days) after consuming the organism.

Those infected with O103 develop bloody diarrhea discharge and vomiting — the duration and severity of the illness can vary. Vigorous hydration and other supportive care is the usual treatment.
