Former county commissioner, business owner, passes away

LUTHER – Kenneth Albert Wenzel, 77, of Luther, passed away on Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at Spectrum Health-Reed City Hospital.

He was born on July 9, 1936, in Charlotte, to George and Marie (Wildern) Wenzel and was a 1954 graduate of Charlotte High School. After moving to Luther in 1986, he became the owner and operator of the Twin Creek Inn until his retirement in 2003. Early in his life, he had been employed with the Krown Kamper Company and with D.E. Wertz company, both of Charlotte. 

Ken was active in his community and served in the past as a Lake County Commissioner, a member of the Luther Fire and Rescue Team, a member of the Luther Lions Club, a Lake County Juvenile Court Representative, a member of the Luther-Lakes No. 370 F&AM Lodge, as the organizer and administrator of the Luther Wednesday Night Music at Purchase Pavilion and a longtime member of the Luther United Methodist Church. 

He enjoyed hunting with family and friends and was a proud member of the Charlotte Big Buck Club.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Wenzel; daughters, Dawn (Brian) Gibbs, Gretchen (Christopher Lockhart) Allan and Jennifer (Brian) Ormsby; son, Robert Allan; grandchildren, Hillarie Gibbs, Brittany Gibbs, Brian Gibbs Jr., Kyle Ormsby and Shea Ormsby; two great-grandchildren; and his brother, Richard (Mildred) Carrigan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Marie Wenzel; brother, Andy Carrigan; and sister, Joan (Dale) Sprague.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 6, 2014, at the Pruitt-Livingston Funeral Home in Reed City. Visitation with the family will be from 11 a.m. until the time of services on Friday at the funeral home.

A memorial contribution may be made in his name to the Luther Lions Club or to the Luther United Methodist Church.
