Bonita Elaine Vasicek

LAKE COUNTY — Bonita Elaine Vasicek (Aunt Bon) was born to Frank and Caroline (Peterson) Vasicek in a log cabin, in the middle of a treacherous snowstorm, in Carr Settlement on March 25, 1938.

She passed away peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016, surrounded by her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her best friend and sister, Nancy Tagliareni; her beloved dog, Pepper; her aunt, Marge; and uncle, Let Peterson; nephews, Dan (Kim) Tagliareni and Jim (Dave) Tagliareni-Lutz; great-nephew and nieces, Tanner, Jessie and Maddie; one great-great-nephew, Maverick; and a host of beloved cousins, friends and extended family, all of whom brought Bon great joy by sharing all of your life's adventures with her. She loved you all so.

I was having a great deal of difficulty trying to sum up Bon's life in a short obituary, so I decided on a series of words and phrases that would capture and express her essence and also express what she meant to all of us... Best friend and best sister ever - Most supportive and unconditionally loving Aunt - Best womyns ball player I ever knew and an even better coach - Greatest Tiger fan/couch potato coach - Her religion is called the American League - Pepper's best friend along with the many many creatures that were treasured before him - Companion to her greatest love Beth for twenty-five years - Mason County Sports Hall of Fame inductee 2013 (one of her proudest and most well deserved days ever)- Fun and fabulous physical education teacher to generations of us at Baldwin community schools- A wonderful colleague, friend, and inspiration to many of her fellow teachers- She told it like it was. Great teacher of sportsmanship and an epic Sportswomyn - Achiever and maker of Dreams for herself and many of us- keeper and passer of our colorful yet shaded history - Life teacher... teacher... teacher... teacher... did I mention teacher? - Pessimist or as we call it, realist - Friend to all the beautiful horses- It's not about how you play the game it's only about winning the game - Ya gotta make hay while the sun shines- I'm older than dirt - Extroverted introvert- It is what it is, darling- Play Ball!... for all of her days and right until the very end, she most certainly did it her way and we will never forget the Incredible Journey that she shared with all of us.

A celebration of life will be held for Aunt Bon on her birthday Friday, March 25, 2016, at Verdun Funeral Home in Baldwin. Visitation with family and friends will commence at 3:00 p.m. and celebration will begin at 4:00 p.m. If you so wish, donations may be made to the Lake County Historical Society, Pathfinder Library, or of course the charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.  Arrangements entrusted to Verdun Funeral Home & Cremation Services 585 7th Street Baldwin, MI. 49304 (231)745-4680.
