BALDWIN - Ben “Benny” Allen Childress II, 70, of Baldwin, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at his home in Baldwin, after a lengthy battle with kidney cancer. He was born in Reed City, Michigan on July 23, 1944 to Ben and Vera Childress. He grew up in the Webber-Baldwin area, and went to Webber Elementary School and Baldwin High School.

Ben was an avid sports fan and outdoors-man. He loved to play golf, and participated in many golf leagues and tournaments every year. He loved hunting and fishing, and enjoyed hunting for morel mushrooms every spring. He loved watching all sports, but was an especially dedicated fan of the Detroit Tigers (just like his mother was) and the Detroit Lions. He was a fixture at his grandsons’ school games.

Ben was preceded in death by his father, Ben, his mother, Vera, and his sisters, Lorraine, Alice and Lucille. He is survived by his wife Laura of 36 years; two daughters, Margaret Ann (Terry) Mock, Shannon Marie Childress; and one son, Ben Allen (Amber) Childress III; nine grandchildren, Orlando Keith Davis II, Quentin Allen McKinney, Ben Allen Childress IV, Kelsey Lynn Warstler, Jalen Kane Thomas, Brandon Allen Childress, Brenton Allen Childress, Braeden Allen Childress, and Landon David Childress; brother, Leroy (Sue) Childress, and sister Berneita Childress; six great-grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.

His service was Monday, December 22, 2014 at Passover House in Baldwin. His service was presided over by his brother, Rev. Leroy Childress, and he was buried near his sister Alice Smith in the Webber Township Cemetery.
