Barbara J. Shepherd


Barbara J. Shepherd passed away on April 24 in Mesa, Arizona at Hospice of the Valley after a long battle with colon cancer.

Barbara was born Barbara K. Drown in Reed City, to Marie (Duffing) Drown and Glen Drown on Feb. 13, 1938. Barbara attended Baldwin Public Schools and graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1956.

Barbara met her husband while employed by Baldwin Schools, where he was a teacher and coach. They married on Feb. 15, 1964 and spent 51 years together until her passing. Barbara and her husband owned and operated the Baldwin Dairy Queen for 20 years.

Barbara is preceded in death by her grandparents, George and Irene Duffing, and her parents, Glen Drown and Marie Dionne. She is survived, in addition to her husband, by three daughters, Kelly Zoellner of Gulliver, Andrea Black of Grand Rapids and Rae Shepherd of Newberry. She is also survived by her brother Ronald and his wife, Rosemarie of Ypsilanti. She will be remembered by her grandchildren, Michael, Mary Ellen, Travis and Rachel Stein, Jamison Cox and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and close family members.

A Memorial Service will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Benzonia on May 24, 2015 at 2 p.m. A luncheon reception will follow
