Arland (Buck) Eugene Purchase, 81, of Custer, passed away at his home on Friday, Jan. 22, 2016 after a long illness.

Arland was born in Luther, Michigan on May 17, 1934, one of 10 children born to the late Bert and OnaMae (Demory) Purchase. He married Florence (VandeVoorde) Vandling on July 18, 1980.

Arland attended Luther High School and joined the US Air Force in 1952 serving until his retirement in 1972; retiring at the rank of Technical Sergeant. He served during the Korean Conflict and did two tours of duty to Bangkok, Thailand during the Vietnam War. Following his retirement from the USAF, he worked at Handy Things in Ludington for several years.

Arland enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed country music, especially the “old time” country. He played the dobro for several years in his family’s band alongside his brothers Roger and Leon, his daughter Cindy and family friend, Lyle Taylor. He loved it when friends and family got together to play music, play cards and visit. He also enjoyed “puttering” around in his garage and yard, watching his birds and keeping track of the weather.

He is survived by his wife, Flo; children, Cindy (Rick) Gleason, Michael (Candy) Purchase and Thomas (Stacy) Purchase, Donald Vandling, Pattie Vandling and John (Carrie) Vandling; grandchildren, Patrick (Christina) Gleason, Stephanie Gleason, Eric (Samantha) Purchase, Tyler Purchase, Ryan Gunnet, Desiree Cook, Clairenda Vandling; great-grandchildren, Ali Lynn Purchase and baby Gleason on the way. He is also survived by brothers, Jack (Betty) Purchase, Elwin Purchase, Dennis Purchase; sisters,  Arlene Beebe, Edith Purchase, Linda Benham and Judy (Tom) Long; sisters-in-law, Paula Purchase and Ruth (Novak) Modreski, Irma (Tom) McCumber, and Linda Cory; and Brother-in-law, Mike (Janet) VandeVoorde.

He is preceeded in death by his parents; brothers, Leon and Roger Purchase; brother-in-law, Raymond Beebe; sisters-in-law Joyce and Joyce Purchase; father-in-law, CJ VandeVoorde; brother-in-law, Fred VandeVoorde; grandson, Justin Vandling; and Viola Bloomberg, mother of his children.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016 from at Oak Grove Funeral Home in Ludington.
