BALDWIN -- The Baldwin Downtown Development Authority oversees beautification of the village. There are currently several new businesses, and a new map indicating these businesses, as well as many that are stalwarts, was needed. Under the direction of Darci Maldonado, Vice-Chair of the DDA, the West Shore Educational Services District was contacted. Darci requested a new map for Baldwin from the graphics arts department. Under the direction of Brian LaCombe, the instructor, MCE student Laney Brynelsen helped refresh and design a new map. It tells about the Baldwin restaurants and stores, and sites like the Lake County Historical Museum, which helps orient our visitors. The map has been placed in the enclosed display case outside of Jones' Ice Cream shop in downtown Baldwin. The WESD oversees and is responsible for the Career and Technical Education department, which is open to junior and senior high school students attending one of the nine schools with whom they partner -- Baldwin, Shelby, Hart, Walkerville, Ludington, Mason County Central, Mason County Eastern, and Gateway to Success Academy. West Shore Community College shares their facilities and equipment with these students, generating talented technicians before they even graduate from high school. Students can choose one of 14 different programs -- health care, computers, welding, construction management and agriculture to name a few. They attend in the afternoon, being bussed from their "home" schools after a morning of regular classes. Current enrollment in the CTE is around 500.
