WSCC hosts College for Kids

SCOTTVILLE - West Shore Community College will host College for Kids 2011, July 25 – 29.

The five-day College for Kids, a hands-on opportunity to explore higher education through arts, sciences, and recreation in a day-camp atmosphere on the college campus, features 19 action-packed learning adventures designed for motivated learners ages 9-13.

This year, Seeking Ecology Education and Design Solutions (SEEDS) Adventure Day Camp staff and students are joining College for Kids on the campus. In addition to teaching several classes, the SEEDS staff is bringing a traditional skills artist to mentor and assist students in their learning activities.

Courses and activities include geocaching, computer Photoshop, ice skating, art around the world, swimming, fishing, acting, dance, basketball, energy conservation, foreign languages and more.

Full-day, week-long participants receive four, hour long activities, two snacks each day, recreational activities and a College for Kids t-shirt for $190. Half-day week-long participants receive two 90-minute activities, recreational activities, one snack each day and a T-shirt for $110.

Participants also may take one 90-minute, week-long activity for $60, which includes recreational activities and a T-shirt. Students should bring a sack lunch or may purchase lunch at the Beans & Bread cafe.

To accommodate the schedule of working parents, College for Kids offers recreation time before morning course activities and after afternoon course activities with drop-off at 7:30 a.m. and pick-up by 5:30 p.m.

SEEDS Adventure Day Camp and College for Kids are offering a limited number of scholarships for qualifying students from Manistee County. Scholarships include partial tuition for the first three-course periods, lunch and transportation provided by Manistee Dial-a-Ride.

Registration for College for Kids is underway through July 15. Early registration is suggested as each activity is limited to 15 participants.
