Take me out to the ball game

BALDWIN - Lake County MSU Extension 4-H in collaboration with Lake County Project FOCUS summer program takes about 70 children and adults to a Grand Rapids West Michigan Whitecaps game last Sunday.

The trip to the game was made possible by local donations from People Helping People, Thrift Shop and the Lake County Children’s Trust Fund to the Lake County 4-H Baseball and Softball Program.

Initially the Whitecaps field trip was set up as an early baseball and softball registration initiative. Baseball and softball participants who signed up early and paid the minimal registration fee were eligible to attend as well as participants from Project FOCUS summer program.

Ages from five to adult were present to watch the Whitecaps play the Bowling Green Hotrods. Highlights of the program were the hotdogs and drinks that all participants received as well as enjoying the atmosphere of a ball park. For Jonathon Allen the greatest highlight was catching a foul ball with a leaning catch over a group of seats with his own mitt.

For many of the other youth this was a perfect ending to a baseball and softball season that starts with registration in March, practice in May and games throughout June. After playing baseball or softball all spring and early summer it was great for the youth to be able to see a minor league ball team in action.

Again, Lake County 4-H would like to thank the Thrift Shop and the Lake County Children’s Trust Fund for their generous donation as well as Project FOCUS who provided the transportation. Hopefully this can become a yearly event and we can get more and more participants involved.
