LAKE COUNTY — Throughout the months of March and April, area residents had an opportunity to gather on Friday evenings for food, fellowship and good causes.

Lenten fish fries provide opportunities for local nonprofit groups to raise funds to support local outreaches. There is still one more Friday for folks to enjoy some fish and contribute to the following causes:

• The Knights of Columbus fish fry takes place from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at St. Ann’s Senior Center, 690 9th St., Baldwin. The menu includes fish (deep fried or baked), French fries or baked potatoes, coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, roll, drink and dessert. Takeout meals are available. The proceeds go back into helping fund community outreaches sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, including support toward St. Ann’s Senior Center, Bread of Life Food Pantry, groups assisting those who are mentally impaired, seminarians and others.

• People have an opportunity to support local veterans with the Peacock Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5315 Friday Fish and Chips. All proceeds stay at the post and help with operational costs. The meal is from 5 to 7 p.m. each Friday until March 30 at the VFW Hall, 2225 S. M-37, Baldwin, where folks have the option of fish, shrimp or chicken strips with french fries and coleslaw. Takeout meals are available. World War II veterans eat free.

• The St. Bernard Catholic Church Fish Fry, in Irons, serves a meal of fried or baked fish, french fries or baked potato, coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, green beans, beverage, roll and dessert from 4 to 7 p.m. each Friday during the Lenten season, at 5734 W. 10 1/2 Mile Road. The proceeds support the church itself and projects. Boy Scouts Troop No. 61 help serve and clear tables and have a tip jar.
