Sheriff’s Office investigating battery thefts

LAKE COUNTY — The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is investigating reports of multiple battery thefts occurring in Lake County the past couple of weeks.

In the first few cases, four batteries were reported stolen from unattended travel trailers in the Wilderness Lake and 12th Street area of Webber Township. One battery theft also was reported at Nugent Lake in Sweetwater Township.

On Wednesday, Sept. 6, officers were informed of 10 stolen marine batteries from boats at the boathouse in Elk Township on 11 1/2 Mile Road and Brooks Road, including a battery from a Department of Natural Resources fisheries boat, according to Sgt. Brad Nixon. The theft occurred between 6 to 9 a.m. before business hours.

“We have no vehicle or suspect description at this time, but we do have a person of interest we are looking at. This person was suspected of stealing batteries in another county,” Nixon said. “All of the stolen property are deep cycle batteries, which are about $150 a piece and go for $12 at Fair Salvage Scrap Yard in Chase. We suspect the batteries were stolen for scrapping money.

“The thefts have covered quite an area in the county. There may be a lot more batteries which were stolen, but haven’t been discovered or reported yet.

“In Webber Township, three of the traveler trailers belonging to weekenders were unattended, and one was 100 yards from a homeowner, who heard a suspicious noise the night the battery was stolen.”

People are asked to report any suspicious activity immediately by calling Central Dispatch at (231) 745-2711 or Silent Observer at (231) 745-7581.

“We recommend securing the batteries in boats and travel trailers and locking all vehicles. Please be vigilant and report any suspicious activity,” Nixon said.
