Sauble sexton honored for service

SAUBLE TWP. - Pete Shakinas was the guest of honor at Tuesday night’s Sauble Township meeting on May 10, and received an award thanking him for his many years serving as sexton.

According to Bill Gillard, township supervisor, Shakinas was a “real blessing” to the township, doing a job many people would refuse to do. “And he did it with kindness,” Gillard noted.

Shakinas served as sexton for 45 years at Elk-Sauble Township’s Lakeview Cemetery. In addition to doing interments, Shakinas was responsible for maintenance at the cemetery.

Gillard added that Ellie Shakinas, Pete’s wife of 59 years, assisted him in maintaining cemetery burial records.

Gillard said, “Pete will be greatly missed for his expertise as a sexton in our community.”

Immediately following the meeting, there was an opportunity to share memories with the guest of honor, as well as cake and ice cream.
