Salmon run and chili cook off to benefit senior center

BALDWIN — Anyone interested in a good cause and enjoying the fresh autumn air is invited to participate in the 10th annual Salmon Run Saturday, Oct. 7.

Proceeds from the Salmon Run, coupled with a chili cook-off on Friday evening, Oct. 6, will benefit services and programs at St. Ann's Senior Center in Baldwin.

Registration for the race begins at 8 a.m. with the race starting at 9 a.m., beginning and finishing at the St. Ann's Senior Center, 960 E. Ninth St., Baldwin.

The chili cook-off will be from 4:30 to 8 p.m. also at St. Ann's Senior Center.

"We have been very busy preparing for the fundraiser," said Darci Maldonado, event coordinator. "I would love to see 100 people participate in the 10K and 5K. The routes for the run/walk are beautiful, with the 10K passing by locations such as Mench Lake and Hamlin Lake. Part of the course is paved, but most is not. It is the same route as last year."

Competition age groups are: under 14, 15 to 19, 20 to 24, 25 to 29, 30 to 34, 35 to 39, 40 to 44, 45 to 49, 50 to 54, 55 to 59, 60 to 64, 65 to 69 and 75 and older. There are men's and women's categories and awards are given in each category.

"We need to get people signed up now so we can get T-shirts ordered. These will have our logo of our mascot  Sammy Salmon," Maldonado said. "The medals this year are modeled from our logo, instead of a standard medal. We wanted to do something special because this is the 10th year.

"It is good knowing there will be money raised at this event to give to services the senior center struggles to pay for. We have a very supportive community."
