Salmon Run, chili cook-off to benefit senior services
BALDWIN — Area residents are invited to put on their running shoes and join the Salmon Run, a 5K and 10K walk/race. The yearly event gives people an opportunity to enjoy the nature surrounding the Baldwin area and support services offered at St. Ann's Senior Center.
"We have had a lot of generous sponsors, but we could use more runners," said event organizer Darci Maldonado.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the race begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, at St. Ann's Senior Center, 690 E. Ninth Street, Baldwin. The 10K is routed through hilly, wooded forests and past scenic lakes. Part of the course is paved, but most of it is not.
The 5K is an easier route with flat, paved surfaces and only one large hill.
Registration prior to Sunday, Sept. 9, is $25 and late registration is $30. Participants can register online at imathlete.com/events/salmonrunbaldwin/register at Pandora's Box 855 Michigan Ave., Baldwin, prior to the race. Pre-registers will get a guaranteed free T-shirt, which also will be handed out to late registers as long as supplies last.
In addition to the race, the community is invited to warm up with some chili during the annual chili cook-off as part of the Salmon Run Festivities.
The cook-off is from 4:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14, at St. Ann's Senior Center. Winners will be announced at 7 p.m. The cost is $5 to enjoy samples of 12 to 15 pots of chili with sides of crackers, coleslaw and desserts, Maldonado added.
