LUTHER — Barry and Alicia Campbell, of Luther, say they are extremely proud of their granddaughter, Campbell Jones, who was recognized nationally for her equestrian skills and achievement.

Jones earned the national USEA (United States Eventing Association) Rider of the Year award, making her the No. 1 rider in the country in the novice division.

Jones’ family has long been part of the Luther area. Her mother, Kathryn Campbell Jones, was a Pine River High School graduate and now lives in Saline.

Jones has been riding since she was 3-years-old. She currently trains in Michigan, Maryland and South Carolina.

Eventing is a combination of dressage, stadium jumping and riding a cross-country course with jumps, obstacles and water hazards. Campbell, who is 13, competed in numerous eventing competitions in several states against riders of all ages, including adults, throughout 2018.

“She is riding at a pre-Olympian stage,” said Jones’ grandfather, Barry Campbell.

The championship is based on total points for the entire year. Jones will receive and accept her award at the national USEA convention in New Orleans on Dec. 7.
