LAKE COUNTY — For Lake County resident Betty Dermyer, it is important service men and women feel remembered and appreciated at Christmastime.

For the past 20 years, Dermyer and a group of volunteers come together to pack Christmas boxes to send to soldiers. On Monday evening at the Webber Township Fire Hall, 15 boxes were packed full of goodies such as homemade baked cookies, pumpkin rolls, caramel corn, hot chocolate, stockings, candy and more.

“There were four couples who started sending Christmas boxes 20 years ago,” Dermyer said, who, along with her late husband and former Lake County Undersheriff Mike Dermyer, started the effort. “These boxes are addressed to service people connected with local families and friends.”
