RSVP seeking transportation volunteers

LAKE COUNTY – The Retired Senior Volunteer Program is seeking volunteer transportation drivers for the Lake County area.

RSVP director Linda Connell said that most of their transportation volunteers currently live in Mecosta County, and it is difficult to schedule transportation assistance for seniors in Lake County because of the distance involved.

“When we have transportation needs in Lake or Osceola counties, the volunteers have quite a distance to travel,” she said. “We are in desperate need of volunteers in Lake County.”

Most of their clients are seniors, but they also have younger clients that may have physical limitations, that sometimes fall through the cracks, she said.

“Some agencies have to have a few day’s notice, or have an age requirement to receive services,” Connell said. “We try to help them if we can.”

RSVP has a lot of different ways to volunteer, but they especially need drivers, she added.

“Our volunteers are our program,” Connell said. “They can volunteer however it works out for them. They can do local or longer distances. Whatever their skills and interests are, we can work it in.

“So many people do not know about us,” she said. “We are always confused with the Commission on Aging, but we have been here for over 50 years.”

Opportunities to volunteer also include: Tutors of Adults & Children, Museum Guides, Libraries, Friendly Visitor & Companionship, American Red Cross Blood Drives, Meal Sites and Meal Delivery, Senior Centers, Head Starts and Preschools, Food & Clothing Pantries, Shopping, Banking & Prescriptions, and many others.

Each RSVP volunteer chooses the type of service, the amount of time spent, and the schedule most convenient for them. With a variety of work sites, and needs in Mecosta, Osceola and Lake County, every volunteer can choose the activities particularly suited to their talents and skills.

Although the time is volunteer, transportation drivers can receive mileage reimbursement, Connell said.
