RSVP looking for tutors

MECOSTA – Mecosta County’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program is looking for volunteers interested in tutoring young adults and adults.

In collaboration with the Friends of the Library and Community Libraries, RSVP Literacy Council of Mecosta is hoping to promote literacy in Mecosta, Osceola and Lake counties through volunteer efforts.

RSVP will hold a training program for volunteers of any age interested in tutoring from 3 to 6 p.m. April 5, 12, 19 and 21, at the Big Rapids Community Library. You are required to attend all sessions to receive certification. Training instructor will be Jerry Nickles from Ferris State University.

Training will be provided throughour April for anyone seeking to be a literacy volunteer. Volunteers will learn tutoring tips for adults and young adults, where to start as a tutor, how to plan sessions, understanding communications, word strategies and measuring progress.

If you are interested in attending the training, call RSVP at (231) 796-4848 by March 18.

Certification in tutoring is provided upon completion of 11 hours training program. The group also is searching for volunteers interested in tutoring for GED Math.

When a person requests the help of a reading tutor, his or her reading level will be assessed. RSVP will then interview the client and match him or her up with a tutor. Most of our requests come from agencies such as Michigan Works!, as well as from teachers, school counselors, librarians and parents of students seeking a GED. Clients will be tutored in a public venue and not a private home.

Families and students are not charged for tutoring. Books and materials will be provided through R.S.V.P. Friends of the Library and Community

Libraries.
