Progress on brown trout sculpture

BALDWIN — For the past couple weeks, Baldwin residents have noticed a construction site on M-37 across the road from the Lake County Historical Museum.

The footing for the world's largest brown trout sculpture has been installed on site. The Down Town Development Authority hopes the sculpture will draw more visitors to Baldwin and attract drivers traveling through the area.

Jane Allison, of the DDA, said everything is coming along.

"We were able to get the footing placed on the site, and are having the concrete tested for hardness," she said. "Once the base is set to go, we will be able to start installing the sculpture, which should be placed at the site sometime in October. We also plan to have the landscaping finished, with a lot of the planting being done in the spring."

The artist, Ivan Iler, of St. Johns, is constructing the statue in his garage, and will transport it to the site in Baldwin when everything is ready.
