Prelim canceled for man accused in Baldwin murder

LAKE COUNTY — A Grand Rapids man accused of killing a Big Rapids man and leaving his body roadside in Baldwin is scheduled for a settlement conference on March 20.

Arthur Leon Jones, 34, was scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary examination on Tuesday, but the proceedings were canceled. He is charged with one count of open murder.

Jones is implicated in the death of Andrew Jerome Smith, 31, of Big Rapids, who was found dead of a gunshot wound on the side of 72nd Street in Baldwin on July 23. Police believe both Smith and Jones were in Baldwin for Trout-a-Rama, but have not released additional details of the case.
