Pine River board purchases new cafeteria furniture

LEROY — Pine River students will have new cafeteria furniture and extra space to enjoy their lunch when they return for the 2015-16 school year.

During the Pine River Area Schools Board of Education meeting on June 8, the board approved a motion to purchase two new tables and 48 new chairs for the high school/middle school cafeteria for $4,500. Superintendent Matthew Lukshaitis said the school is in need of the extra seating.

In other business, the board presented a high school diploma to Gene Fullerton, who served in the Korean Conflict. Fullerton, who attended Luther High School as a teenager, joined the U.S. Navy in 1949 at 17 years old and served for four years.

In more business, board members:

  • Approved a motion to increase the pay rate for substitute teachers. Full-day sub pay will increase from $80 to $98, half-day sub pay will increase from $45 to $55, pay for long-term subs teaching for a semester or more will increase by 20 percent depending on the length of time in the classroom, and substitute administrators will receive $120 per day.
  • Accepted the resignation of middle school language arts teacher Heidi Hays,
  • Approved coaching recommendations JR Holmes and Brent Ruppert for the middle school football team and Emilee Crawford for competitive and sideline cheer, and
  • Approved the school calendar for the 2015-16 school year, with graduation to take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, 2016.
