Pathfinder Library sale raises much needed funds

LAKE COUNTY — Baldwin’s Pathfinder Library has announced that its yearly Memorial Day weekend sale is scheduled for this Friday and Saturday.

In what has become a beloved annual tradition, the library will be opening its doors on Friday, May 27 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday May 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to welcome area book-lovers to the festivities. As always, visitors can expect a terrific variety of scrumptious baked goods such as breads, cakes, pies, cookies, and muffins. In addition, the library will offer a huge selection of yard-sale items. In years past, treasure-hunters and second-hand bargain seekers have found household goods -- kitchen gadgets, china and glasswear, knick-knacks, used books, collectibles, garden tools, jewelry, and clothing. Some of the “prizes” are really cute, and the prices are always fantastic!

This year a special bargain is being offered: a generous patron who loves the library has donated a beautiful hand-made wooden wishing well. If you are in the market for an attractive and unusual lawn ornament, be sure to come and see it — on Friday morning at 9 a.m.

Local residents look forward to the Pathfinder’s sales because they always prove to be an occasion for fun and lively community get-togethers. The spirit is festive, old friends meet (sometimes after a winter spent apart) and everybody seems glad to pick up yummy treats and unexpected yard-sale “finds.” At the same time, the Memorial Day weekend sale provides a great opportunity to plan your summer reading and make sure that your kids have library cards and some good books to start the vacation.

The Pathfinder Library is one of Baldwin’s finest community assets. Its staff is always helpful and dedicated and is constantly updating the collection and offering new services. They remind us that a life without books is only half a life, and that the habit of reading enriches us, challenges us, keeps us better informed and makes us better citizens. Literacy offers us a path to success, while illiteracy is nothing but a ticket downhill.

The Memorial Day weekend sale with its picnic atmosphere is a happy occasions, but it is also a very important help to the Pathfinder. As we all know, there has been a substantial decline in state aid in recent years, and libraries really depend upon the participation of the community to help them keep up their high standards. When we pitch in and do our part to support the library, everybody benefits.

The Pathfinder is still accepting donations — both baked goods and yard goods. Anything you can give will be appreciated! For more information, stop by the library at 812 Michigan Avenue in Baldwin or give them a call at (231) 745-4014.

See you at the sale!
