PRAS purchases additional Chromebooks

LEROY — New Chromebooks will be in the hands of more students following the adoption of a resolution to purchase 265 additional laptops at Monday's Pine River Area Schools Board of Education meeting.

The board approved Title 1 fund spending of $66,000 to purchase the Chromebooks for fourth, seventh and tenth graders. Pine River Area Elementary School Principal Jaime Heuker told the board the students and teachers have enjoyed the tools and their ease of use for learning and testing.

In other business, the board approved a motion to begin planning services with Anthony Esson Architecture for a possible 2016 bond proposal.

PRAS Superintendent Matt Lukshaitis said assessments of the district have occurred throughout the year and improvements to the middle/high school roof and parking lot are needed, as well as safety and security upgrades and other aspects. He said the bond proposal is tentative and would be on the primary ballot in August 2016 if the district plans to go forward with it.

In more business, the board:

  1. Approved a motion to sell teacher desktop computers for $20 per unit to the Wexford-Missaukee ISD for their disposal or resale, and
  2. Approved the purchase of the iReady Diagnostic and Instructional Program at the approximate cost of $43,500 for three years. The program provides data on student reading, writing and math skills and compiles a report for staff to meet the needs of the students in those areas of struggle. The funds will be taken out of Title 1 or 31A funding.
