PASTOR'S PEN: Love not things that are in the world

By Pastor David Stiles

In this new year is there a goal to acheive?

Is there a command to obey?

Is there an illustration to learn from?

The short answer is yes! The Word of God says, “Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Rom. 12:2).

There is further a direction in First John, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world” (1Jn2:15). We are warned by God here. Don’t be deceived by the customs, manners, worship or fashions of the world. Don’t highly esteem the world. Don’t fix your thinking on the world. Don’t desire or long for the world.

Don’t set your heart on it. Don’t burn up all your strength on the world. The list goes on and on. The Bible says, “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world” (1Jn2:16). Will you pay attention to almighty God?

We are in a spiritual war. Watch out for the enemy. Be prepared for a continuous bloody battle. The Devil is a vicious foe. Satan wanted to kill the baby Jesus in Bethlehem. What is his battle strategy today? He wants you to be dead or useless in this war. He seeks you to be powerless in every battle. The old bait and switch. “And the world passeth away and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever” (1Jn2:17). The world pretends to be the most important on your priority list.

However, we discover by God’s word that all of this will one day pass away. Why put all of your energy and hopes in this world? We have our hope in Christ. Our only hope is to do the will of God. It is God’s will that you trust Christ for eternal life.

The Bible says, “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to usward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance”(2Pet3:9). Have Christ remove your sin debt today. He is the only one who can atone for our sin. Believe Christ’s promises then live for him. We live in this world but we are not to love this present world. Love not the world. You can’t love God and the world. Which will work out better for eternity? How much better to have the love of God in you heart. “Set your affection on the things above, not on things on the earth” (Col.3:2).

Where is the direction for your affections? Are they heavenly or worldly? Christ shed his blood for us. Have you admitted your sinful status to him, and put your faith in the risen Saviour? Put your faith in Christ and Christ alone today. He will save your soul and give you an abundant life. Don’t fall for the Devil’s lies or embrace the world. Love not the world. Accept Christ today. Live this year as a child of God.
