REED CITY — Christina and Larry Hinken, of Irons, recently wrapped up their third annual Night Owl fundraiser to assist Lake County breast cancer patients. Last week they presented the proceeds of their fundraiser at Susan P. Wheatlake Regional Cancer Center in Reed City, which serves cancer patients in a large area surrounding the center.

The event on Oct. 20 in Irons raised $5,187 to help Lake County breast cancer patients treated at the center. The funds help patients with transportation costs, preventive and wellness services.

“The work the Hinkens do to help others is just remarkable,” said Jen Ames, practice manager at the cancer center. “We so respect and appreciate their efforts, as do the patients they have helped with their Night Owl event.”

Christina is approaching the fifth anniversary of her own successful treatment.

“I know first-hand the financial stress and emotional burden that can accompany a cancer diagnosis,” she said. “That’s what motivated us to raise funds to help others facing these challenges. We want to get the word out and let Lake County residents know funds are available to those who need treatments at the Susan P. Wheatlake Cancer Center.”

Ames, who recently took over leadership of the center, said she hopes to attend the event next year, which the couple is already planning for October, 2019.
