New online service means easier road for truckers

Michigan-based truck drivers now have a convenient place to go to perform many of their vehicle registration-related transactions with the Department of State: online. Secretary of State Ruth Johnson announced the new service Tuesday night at the Michigan Trucking Association’s annual Safety Awards Banquet in Lansing, where she helped honor those most dedicated to safety in the state’s trucking industry.

The web-based system, known as IRP Online, allows motor carriers that travel across the United States and Canada to manage their accounts with the department via the Internet, rather than in person, by mail or by fax.

Offering transactions online allows carriers to avoid filling out paperwork and sending it to the department with a paper check. They now can pay online with an e-check. IRP Online is easy to use and intuitive, Johnson said. It provides step-by-step instructions and an online training manual. Now, instead of handling paperwork, carriers can spend more time on the road delivering goods and services across North America.

IRP is short for the International Registration Plan, a reciprocal agreement that involves most states and Canadian provinces. The IRP provides for license fee payment based on the fleet distance operated in member jurisdictions. Michigan has been participating since 1985.

Transactions that may be processed through IRP Online include renewing vehicle registrations; adding vehicles; adding jurisdictions (states/provinces); replacing cab cards (vehicle registration certificates); plates and stickers and editing account information.

There are approximately fleets and 35,000 vehicles in Michigan covered by the International Registration Plan. Of those, more than 400 carriers have registered for IRP Online.
