Memorial Walls to be displayed at AMVETS for Blessing weekend

BALDWIN — Blessing of the Bikes, hosted this year by AMVETS Post No. 1988, will honor the sacrifices of service men and women. The Michigan Vietnam Memorial Wall and the Michigan Middle Eastern Conflict Wall will be on display at AMVETS throughout the weekend.

"The procession to bring the memorial walls to Lake County will start in Newaygo on Thursday morning," said Pam Richardson, who is helping to organize the weekend's events. "The walls will be placed in a semi truck and escorted by police troops and bikers from clubs all over. The procession will travel about 35 miles per hour, so it will take a while to get to the AMVETS building. We expect the walls to arrive at AMVETS at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon."

There will be special services at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 19, at AMVETS Post No. 1988, which include a 21 gun salute, special speakers, a ceremony honoring soldiers killed in action and a Prisoner of War memorial ceremony.

Breakfast will be served to the public at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, at AMVETS and the Scottville Clown Band also will be performing there from 2 to 4 p.m.

"The AMVETS post will be open all weekend to the public," Richardson said. "The memorial walls will be on display until Sunday. There also will be Blessing of the Bikes t-shirts available for sale."
