MLK celebration planned

BALDWIN — The Martin Luther King, Jr., Commemorative Committee cordially invites the public to attend its annual Dr. King Celebration at 2:45 p.m. on Sunday at the Baldwin High Gym, 525 E 4th, Baldwin, A muscical drama presentation will be performed by local artists entitled “Freedom on the Menu: The Greensboro Sit-ins.”

Also featured will be the Ajani Drum Ensemble. These performances will be entertaining and educational.

The keynote address is being delivered by Pastor Joe Washington. Pastor Washington is pastor of Christ Community Church in Baldwin. He attended Louisiana State University-Shreveport and received a baccalaureate degree in Political Science in 1996. He also attended Ferris State University and received a Master of Arts in Education (Curriculum/Instruction and Administration) in 2008. He is currently working on Masters of Biblical Studies and Doctorate of Divinity from Slidell Baptist Theological Seminary.

In 1996 he began teaching high school social studies for Caddo Parish School District (Shreveport, LA) where he also coached varsity football and varsity baseball. In 2001, he moved to Baldwin, where he taught at Baldwin High School until 2011 before becoming a UniServ Director for the Michigan Education Association.

Every year the committee presents a Giant Award. This year’s Giant recipient is Mr. P.T. Jones-Salaam.

Also featured are local student essay competition winners.

A free dinner will be served to the public from 1 to 2:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
