MLK Day speaker announced

IDLEWILD - The Idlewild Centennial Committee will commemorate the Jan. 15 birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a special noon keynote address from noted local Civil Rights activist Harold B. Williams on Friday, Jan. 13, at the Henrietta Summer Senior Center in Idlewild.

During his outstanding career, Williams has served in several national civil rights capacities including as the former director of civil rights for the U.S. Department of Transportation and as former deputy assistant commissioner for the U.S. Office of Education EEO Executive.

According to Centennial Commission Co- chairman Mildred A. Kyles, Williams also served as secretary of the Cleveland branch NAACP where he increased their membership to 20,000.

“His civil rights fight through the years has subjected him to arrests, jailing’s, cross burnings and threats to the lives of his family and himself. His commitment to civil rights for all people should be encouraging for the entire community and the Centennial Committee is please to feature him at our celebration,” Kyles said.

The public is invited to attend the event at the senior center which is located at 723. E. Lansing in Idlewild.
