LAKE COUNTY — Fire crews battled a house fire at approximately 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, on Lakola Road, three-quarters of one mile north of 20 Mile Road.

The structure still is standing, but the interior is badly damaged and uninhabitable.

“We were called in to assist Tustin Fire Department,” said Luther Fire Chief Don Nixon, who said LeRoy Fire Department, Ashton Fire Department, Cherry Grove Fire Department and Marion Fire Department also assisted on scene.

The family was able to escape the home, Nixon said. It took nearly three hours to contain the fire, which started in the rear of the home and spread to the second floor and attic.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
