Luther Chili Cook-Off set for this Saturday

Proceeds to benefit 3 local groups/events

LUTHER — When it comes to celebrating their heritage, the residents of Luther come together in fun and exciting ways.

Each year, as the chill of November sets in, downtown Luther is bustling with activity during the annual tailgate chili cook off, right on State Street.

The cooking begins at 10 a.m., with tasting at 1 p.m., on Saturday, Nov. 13, in Luther. This year's theme for the "party in the street" is Michigan's heroes and legends. Examples could include Henry Ford, Kid Rock, etc., Organizers encourage creativity.

Proceeds will benefit three Luther groups/events. All proceeds from the large raffle will go toward the Luther Days, the town's festival in early July which draws visitors from all over the area.

All entree fees and cup-tasting purchases will benefit the Luther Lions Club, as well as the Purchase Pavilion.

First, second and third place prizes will be awarded for the best tasting chili, as well as the most creative use of the theme.

The entry fee for chili cooking contestants is $20. Contestants check in at the Ellsworth Township Hall.

Contestants are asked to bring supplies to make 5 to 7 gallons of chili, on their tailgate, supplies for their own hand-washing station and extra cooking and serving utensils.
