Local woman honored by Great Lakes Fishery Commission

BALDWIN — Ellie Koon Smith, of Baldwin, recently became the recipient of the prestigious Vernon Applegate Award for Outstanding Contributions to Sea Lamprey Control.

The award was presented to Ellie at the Great Lakes Fishery Commission’s annual meeting in Chicago on June 3.

Smith, who retired from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service in late 2012, was a former head Treatment Biologist responsible for planning, delivery and execution of stream treatments to control lamprey larvae throughout the Great Lakes basin. She was nominated for this award for her decades of outstanding, dedicated contributions to the sea lamprey control program, including her work to develop and oversee the lamprey barrier program and plan, implement, lead and improve lampricide application.
