Lakeshore Children's Chorus forms in Ludington

Registration is now open for the Lakeshore Children’s Chorus. Children in second through eighth grade will begin practices on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at the Ludington Area Center for the Arts. There will be an open registration event 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18, at the Center for the Arts, 107 S. Harrison Street, Ludington. Registration also can be done by calling the Center at (231) 845-2787.

Two separate choirs, directed by Ludington musician Paula Jury Jarvis, are designed to give kids from Mason, Oceana, Manistee and Lake counties an additional opportunity to experience and enjoy music, make new friends from other schools and represent our community through performances. “Junior Voices” is a choir for second-through fifth-graders and will rehearse at the Center for the Arts from 4 to 4:50 p.m. each Wednesday. The “Extensions” chorus is for children in grades sixth through eighth, with practices from 5 to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Tuition for the Lakeshore Children’s Chorus is $5 per week with multiple child discounts. Scholarships will be made available, so all interested children should register. There is no audition process as this is an opportunity open to all children who love to sing. Information can be found at or by joining the Facebook fan page.

The choirs are a vision of Jarvis, a Ludington graduate, who returned to the area in 2010 to be the director of the Great Start Collaborative, an early childhood community partnership. “At this time, when many schools in our districts have no choral or even elementary music programs, children are in need of more opportunities to sing, regardless of ability. This group offers a learning extension and life experience, giving children an extra chance to sing every week, to make new friends, to become better musicians and successful people. We have a rich arts culture in the area that will be enhanced by regular performances by area children doing what comes natural ... singing. I believe that this area is ripe for a substantial children’s fine arts program and what a fun way to support that.”

Jarvis is a 1987 graduate of Ludington High School, received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from Central Michigan University and has taught music in both Michigan and San Antonio, Tex. Her experiences as a performer and entertainment producer give her a unique combination of skills that will make the Lakeshore Children’s Chorus not only a great learning experience, but a community asset.
