Lake County 4-H gearing up for annual Capital Experience

LAKE COUNTY - The 4-H Capital Experience is an annual four-day conference in March that focuses on civic engagement and public policy.

Lake County is gearing up to send youth to Lansing to experience state government in action. Lake County youth will have the opportunity to learn how they can get involved with policy issues.

Participants interact with legislators, state agency staff, lobbyists and other resource people to learn how policy is made. Through these educational experiences Lake County youth will:

  • Increase their understanding and knowledge of state government.
  • Discover ways to influence public policy decisions.
  • Explore careers in public policy.
  • Network with other young people and public policy professionals.
  • Develop a positive attitude toward their ability to affect public policy.
  • Increase their leadership and citizenship skills.

During four days in March (March 18-21), more than 100 teens from around the state will spend time in Lansing. Participants will have the opportunity to visit the State Capital Building, the Supreme Court and state and community agencies.

Traditionally, Lake County has been a leader in the state by sending at least four students to Lansing every year for the last 10 years to participate in Capital Experience.

This would not be possible if we did not have such great community support. The MSU Extension Office 4-H program works closely with Baldwin Schools to select students to go to the Capital Experience. In addition, the 4-H program looks for community sponsors to help offset the cost of sending students to Lansing. This year we are having great support from the community and already have a great number of sponsorships.

A big thanks from the MSU Extension Office goes out to these sponsors. These sponsors are giving youth in Lake County a chance to participate in experiential learning activities that reinforces Michigan State Content Standards for Social Studies Education in civic perspective, public discourse and decision-making and citizen involvement.
