State Police to host meet-and-greet in Baldwin

BALDWIN — The Michigan State Police of the Hart Post are extending an invitation to Lake County residents to join them for a cup of coffee.

Called "Coffee with a Cop," the troopers of the Hart Post will be hosting a meet and greet in Baldwin to give the people of Lake County a chance to get to know some of their local State Police troopers and ask them about any questions or concerns they might have.

"The department has been doing this for a while now, so we can get out and interact with the community in a situation where a crime isn't involved," said Trooper Dan Thomas, the Community Service Trooper for the Hart Post. "The community can get a sense of knowing the troopers working in the area and they learn more about our role in the area."

The event will take place from 9 to11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29, at Gramma's Treats in Baldwin.

The Hart Post has been organizing meet and greets like this for the past year. This will be their fourth in their coverage area and they are hoping to set up two more in the Newaygo region before the year is out.

"We want to make sure we can give everyone we serve a chance to talk with us and ask us any questions they might have," said Thomas.

Thomas said there is no agenda or particular message the department is trying to get out to the public, they simply want to get to know those in the community and give the community the chance to get to know them, especially when they aren't in the course of their duties.

"We just want to show people we're approachable and here to serve their interests," explained Thomas. "There's been a lot of negativity towards law enforcement in the media lately and we want to show everyone there's a different side to us."
