Gearing up for Luther Logging Days
LUTHER — The streets of Luther will soon be humming with one of the biggest festivals in Lake County, Luther Logging Days, attracting hundreds of visitors from miles around. Luther Logging Days celebrates Luther’s logging heritage with old-fashioned family fun.
The fun begins at 9 a.m. on Friday, June 29, with the Youth Mill Pond Fishing Tournament. The contest goes until noon and medals are awarded at 12:30 p.m.
The event includes vendors, carnival amusements and live music entertainment throughout the weekend.
Many contests will take place on Friday including a watermelon eating contest at 2 p.m., a chicken throwing contest at 2:30 p.m. and a free youth pool tournament at 4 p.m. At 5 p.m. there will be a bubble blowing contest, a sidewalk chalk art contest and jump rope contest. Single eight-ball pool tournaments will take place at 6 and 8 p.m. Carnival-style bingo will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Newkirk Township Hall.
Crowning of Miss Luther will take place at 6 p.m. at Purchase Pavilion. A teen dance with J&B Beats will be from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Mill Pond.
A book and craft sale also is available at the Luther Area Public Library from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Saturday starts early with registration for a 5K run/walk from 6:30 to 7:40 a.m. The race begins at 8 a.m. on Main Street.
People are encouraged to bring their appetites to an all-you-can-eat breakfast at 8 a.m. at the Luther Lions Hall.
The Luther Area Museum will offer chicken barbecue at noon.
The Luther Logging Days Grand Parade begins at 11 a.m. on Main Street downtown.
Gordon the Magician will be on hand to entertain folks at noon on Main Stage, and a car show at the Mill Pond and a tractor pull at Twin Creek Inn will take place at 1 p.m.
A popular highlight of the festival is the lumberjack show, bringing in professional lumberjacks throughout the nation to compete. This event begins at 3 p.m. in the free show lot and includes chopping, cross-cutting, bow-sawing, hot saws, ax-throwing and the Canadian Water Boil.
Kids games in the park will be from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Methodist Church yard.
Contests on Saturday include a nine-ball pool tournament and women’s eight-ball pool tournament at 1 p.m.; a mixed scotch doubles pool tournament at 4:30 p.m.; and a broomstick eight-ball pool tournament at 7 p.m. At 1 p.m., there will be an arm wrestling contest, Fear Factor Luther style, a Frisbee challenge, and a penny scramble. At 2 p.m. there is a hot dong eating contest, corn hole tournament and carnival bingo, which will go to 6 p.m.
Fear Factor Luther style will take place again at 4 p.m. and “Come on Down” for Luther’s version of the “Price is Right: will be at 5 p.m.
There will be a car show at 1 p.m. at the Mill Pond, and all former students, including those who attended Pine River, are invited to the Luther Alumni Social Banquet at 6:30 p.m. at the Luther Lions Hall.
Sunday kicks off with an all-you-can-eat breakfast at 8 a.m. at the Luther Lions Hall.
A kid and pet parade will be at noon on Main Street. A cake walk will follow at 12:30 p.m. on the Main Stage. A dance-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Main Street.
At 3 p.m., the lumberjack show continues with a cut, split and stack competition followed by an amateur chainsaw contest. The beautiful baby contest also will take place at Ellsworth Township Hall.
A fireman’s water slide will be available from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Mill Pond.
Contests include all-day softball tournaments; eight-ball street pool tournament at 1 p.m.; a youth pool tournament at 4 p.m.; a broomstick pool tournament at 6 p.m.; a three-on-three basketball tournament at 1 p.m.; a cupid shuffle on Main Street at 3:30 p.m.; a rubber ducky run at 4 p.m.; Fear Factor Luther style at 5 p.m. and carnival style bingo from 1 to 5 p.m.
At 9 p.m., the beautiful baby and cutest pet winners will be announced at the Mill Pond. The big raffle drawing also will be announced.
At dusk, one of the best-known fireworks displays in the area will shoot off over the Mill Pond, concluding another year of fun at Luther Logging Days.
