Fun Halloween events scheduled in Lake County

LAKE COUNTY — Young people and young people at heart will have several opportunities to get in the Halloween spirit and enjoy some fun throughout Lake County as the day of spookiness, costumes and treats approaches.

Saturday, Oct. 23 Events

The S&K Haunted Trail, in Idlewild, will take place this Saturday, Oct. 23, with the pole barn open at 7:30 p.m. for free hot dogs and hot cocoa for everyone, and candy for the kids. The trail will start when it gets dark. The free event will take place at Shawn Coffey's house at 7450 Coffey, Ave., Idlewild.

The Luther Area Public Library will host a Free Monster Movie and Snacks event at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, with the showing of "Godzilla vs. Kong." Movies are funded by a grant from the Lake County Community Foundation.

Friday, Oct. 29 Events

The Lake County Children's Trust Fund is hosting at Trunk or Treat from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29, at Baldwin High School. Set up will begin at 3 p.m. in the back parking lot of the school.

"The purpose of this event is to provide a safe, positive, yet fun environment for the youth of the community," organizers explained.

Local businesses and organizations will line the Baldwin High School parking lot to hand out candy and goodies as kids and families, dressed in costumes, walk through the school parking lot to enjoy the fun of collecting treats and looking at decorated cars.

Families, businesses, groups and student organizations are invited to decorate a trunk, and distribute candy and goodies for the event. Creativity is highly encouraged. If interested, contact Qur'an Griffin at 231-368-1051 to reserve a spot. Masks are highly recommended if not part of a costume.

Saturday, Oct. 30 Events

The annual Halloween Trunk or Treat event, hosted by the Women's Auxiliary at AMVETS Post No. 1988, will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30, in the AMVETS parking lot. All children are invited to come in their favorite costume and bring their parents. Free hot dogs will be given to all children, and hot dogs for adults are 50 cents each. Hot chocolate also will be provided.

The Baldwin Lions Club, in conjunction with the VFW Post No. 5315, will host an indoor "Trick-or-Treat" for the first time, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Baldwin Village Office, in the fire building, on Saturday, Oct. 29.

"We wanted a safe and dry event, and felt kids needed a safe place to do this where it isn't windy, wet or cold," said Ron Prys, of the Baldwin Lions Club, mentioning he and his wife began an event like this in Marne years ago, and 45 years later, it is still going strong.

There will be popcorn, cider (hot and cold), fresh-made donuts from the Big Star Lake area, and candy to give out to the kids. There also will be a costume contest for the kids, ages 0 up to the sixth-grade with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes (gift cards from local businesses.)

"We are trying to keep it all in town," Prys added. "We welcome anyone who would like to join us to bring treats and hand them out. If you need a table you wil have to bring your own."

Lilley Township Fire Department Station will host a Trunk 'r Treat and Haunted House from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30, at Lilley Township fire barn and township office, on Prospect St., Bitely.

Private message Bitely Community Group on Facebook to sign up as a trunker, to donate candy, treats or prizes for contests or to pick up items. To participate in a pumpkin contest, bring completed pumpkins to the multipurpose building before 5 p.m. For the costume contest, pictures will be taken at the multipurpose building. Contestants are to let Tammy know they are entering the contest and she will take their picture,

Trick-or-treating also will be Saturday, Oct. 30, in the Village of Baldwin.

Sunday, Oct. 31 Events

The Knights of Columbus will host a Trunk or Treat at St. Ann's Catholic Church parking lot in Baldwin, from 2-5 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 31, rain or shine. Hot dogs, a bag of chips and a soft drink will be served. Participants also have a chance to win a contest for best dressed vehicle. If interested in participating in the event, contact the church office at 231-745-7997. Come out and enjoy the fun.
