LAKE COUNTY — Grab those tackle boxes; anglers will get a chance to head out to the nearest lake to participate in the upcoming Free Fishing Weekend whether they have a license or not.

The Free Fishing Weekend is an event hosted twice each year by Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources; once in February and again in June. On Saturday, Feb. 13, and Sunday, Feb. 14, anyone with a love of fishing is not required to carry a license while hitting Michigan's lakes or rivers. As most Michigan lakes are frozen solid in February, the winter weekend event is traditionally used for ice fishing.

"Plenty of our youngsters are starting to get interested in wildlife for the first time," remarked Rep. Bumstead, R-Newaygo. "The Free Fishing Weekend is a great way to get them acquainted with the outdoors."

Because Michigan temperatures have been generally mild until mid-January this year, DNR officials encourage anglers to take extra safety precautions when venturing out onto the ice to drop a line.
