BALDWIN — Selected Baldwin Junior and Senior High School students, staff and parents received honor and recognition during the second annual Excellence Awards Banquet Ceremony on May 31.

Among those recognized were recipients of Staff of the Month and Parent of the Month — staff and parents chosen by Principal Calvin Patillo to be highlighted in an article in the Lake County Star each month.

Athletic Director Shawn Williams gave awards to star athletes.

“We’re celebrating us. We don’t do a lot of that, so tonight is special,” Williams said. “If you look up excellence in the dictionary, it means extremely good. Our athletes persevere in everything they do — showing excellence.”

Band and choir awards were given to student musicians. Band members also received district medals for earning a rank of two at the district band festival in McBain. Band director Brian Parent described how hard students worked to achieve that score, noting eighth-grade band students also participated along with the high school band at festival.

A John Philip Sousa award was presented to junior Spencer Sabin for outstanding achievement. His name will be engraved in a plaque to be placed in the band room.  A  National Choral Award was presented to Comeela Shepard, who also will have her name engraved on a plaque to be placed in the music room.

The Baldwin High School choir and Baldwin High School jazz band performed song selections for guests.

Star students were recognized for academic achievement of a 3.0 and higher grade point average for all three marking periods.

“This is a night to let people know what we do in Baldwin. We have got to be excited when we see our students doing so well,” Patillo said, giving recognition to the families of the students and all who were honored at the ceremony.
