Disc Golf League forming for 2011 season

BALDWIN - The Baldwin 4-H Group is offering a Disc Golf League this summer, for boys and girls ages 10 to 18.

The program includes three main components: local league, travel league and three Saturday tournaments.

Interested participants will need to fill out a registration form, and pay $20 (which includes three discs) or $10 if they supply their own equipment. Registration is ongoing, but good attendance will be used to determine which players qualify for tournaments, so the sooner you register the better. Disc golf is a challenging and accessible sport where players compete not only with their peers, but with themselves.

The goal of the program is to promote sportsmanship, exercise, community, competition, and fun. Participants will spend time outdoors, and will have the opportunity to travel to unique Michigan disc golf courses.

Local league play will be held weekly Tuesday and Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. (this will be reduced to just Fridays when travel league begins on July 12). Local league will always be at the Baldwin Community High School and will consist of skill drills (practice) and a nine-hole round. Local play will be similar to travel play by establishing a player handicap, learning and following the rules of the game, and competing for various prizes.

Travel league is a weekly event in which coaches and players will travel to Ludington to compete on one of three professional-level courses overlooking Lake Michigan.

Kids will use the skills learned during local league to play unique courses against other local contestants. We will be focusing on positive attitudes, teamwork and self-improvement. Kids will also have the opportunity to win more discs during travel league.

Finally, the program includes the chance to play in three real tournaments, including the Michigan State Disc Golf Finals. Players should be excited to play at Hickory Hills in Traverse City, and Flip City in Shelby.

Both courses are unique and outstanding places to play disc golf. The state finals tournament will be held at the Ludington course which participants will become familiar with through the travel league.

In addition we will host the own year-end tournament at the Baldwin course. Dates of all events will be provided upon registration.

The Disc Golf program is run by Seth Hopkins, MSU Extension, 4-H and assisted by Matt Webster. If there are any comments or questions regarding the program please contact Hopkins at the MSU Extension Office (231) 745-2732.

Both Hopkins and Webster have disc golf skills, as well as experience working with kids. To register players need only to show up at the local league at 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays at the high school.

This program is a great way to have fun outdoors, compete with friends, and travel to new places during the summer season.
