Deadline Reminder

All items for the Lake County Star Community Planner must be in the Lake County Star office no later than NOON ON MONDAY for that week’s paper.

Remember, the earlier you get your items to us, the better chance you have for it to be included. The goal is to give each non-profit group coverage for two weeks.

Head Start

Enrollment for the Head Start Program is now open. The program for children ages 3 (by Oct. 1) to 5 years of age.

Ages and Stages Questionnaire is an interactive screening that helps parents of children ages 0 to 5 years recognize;

Developmental milestones: Activities that encourage healthy development.

C.O.V.E. Group to Meet

C.O.V.E. (Communities Overcoming Violent Encounters) will be starting a Women’s Support Group in January 2015. The group will meet on Thursday afternoon. If you are interested in attending, call 231-843-2541 Ext. 29 or 231-745-8122.

VA Assistance

The Department of Veterans Affairs will be available for Lake County Enrollment/Information on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at Amvets Post 1988 in Baldwin. The time for the second Thursday is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the fourth Thursday is from 12 to 4 p.m. Veterans who have not enrolled before need to bring a copy of their DD214 and last year’s financial information. Lake County Historical Society

The Lake County Historical Society Historical Museum Room is open Friday afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m., or by appointment by calling (231) 898-2194. Museum exhibits include logging, one-room schools and a 1940s kitchen. Lobby displays can be viewed Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 830 N. Michigan Ave. in Baldwin.

Men of Purpose Breakfast

A Men’s Breakfast will be held at God’s True Vine Church, 5889 S. Nelson Rd., Idlewild (north of US-10), on Saturday, Jan. 3 at 9 a.m.

Electronics Recycling

Electronics can be recycled on Saturday, Jan. 3 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Luther Village Hall, 301 State St. This service is available to anyone from any where. They cannot accept cathode ray TV’s.

Lake County Sportsmans Club to Meet

The Lake County Sportsmans Club will meet on the first Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. and on the second Thursday at 7 p.m. The Thursday meeting is a Board meeting, but members are welcome to attend. The meetings are held at the Chamber of Commerce building (with Grandma’s Treats, corner of 8th St. and M-37) in Baldwin. The next meeting will be on Saturday, Jan. 3.

A.A. Meetings

An Alanon group for family members and friends of those struggling with addictions meets at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Brohman Chapel, 7731 N. Woodbridge Rd., (M-37) in Brohman. Please use the north door for this (downstairs) meeting.

A Look Ahead

Stehouwer Free Clinic

Free limited health care services are available in Cadillac for residents of Wexford, Missaukee and parts of Osceola and Lake counties with low income and no health insurance. Weekly health clinics are scheduled based on availability of volunteer health care providers. New patients need to call 231-876-6150 for an eligibility appointment, which are held Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

Office hours are Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (closed noon to 1 p.m.).

Lake County Health and Services

Lake County Health and Services will meet on Monday, Jan. 5 at 5 p.m. at Grand Oaks Nursing Home, 600 Denmark.

Monday School

Monday School takes place at the Luther Methodist Church each Monday beginning at 4 p.m. CHECK for Holiday Hours.

Summers Senior Center

The Henrietta Summers Senior Center, located at 723 E. Grief Support Group Meets

A Hospice of Michigan grief support group meets the second Monday of each month from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Briny Building office suites conference room, 50 Filer Street, Suite 210, in Manistee. The group is open to anyone who is grieving a loss. There is no charge to participate. The next meeting is Jan. 12, 2015. VA Without Walls

Volunteers Needed

C.O.V.E. (Communities Overcoming Violent Encounters), formerly known as Region Four Community Services (The Women’s Shelter) is seeking a group of People willing to share some of their free time. A training will be held for those interested in assisting staff in answering the crisis line and/or being a receptionist. If you are willing to donate a few hours of your time, please contact Marie at (231) 843-2541.

Items needed for the shelter include: Curtains, diapers (infant to size 5), feminine products (pads & tampons) and socks.

Hospice of Michigan Sesame Street Package

Hospice of Michigan is pleased to offer the Sesame Street program titled When Families Grieve through the Pathfinder Public Library in Baldwin. The kits are bilingual (English and Spanish) and include two booklets and a DVD. Particularly designed to help children grieve, the kit also is to help patients and families sort through complex emotions, remember the life of a loved one, and find strength in one another.
