Head Start

Enrollment for the Head Start Program is now open. The program for children ages 3 (by Oct. 1) to 5 years of age.

VA Assistance

The Department of Veterans Affairs will be available for Lake County Enrollment/Information on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at Amvets Post 1988 in Baldwin. The time for the second Thursday is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the fourth Thursday is from 12 to 4 p.m. Veterans who have not enrolled before need to bring a copy of their DD214 and last year’s financial information. FiveCAP, Inc.

The Board of FiveCAP, Inc. will meet on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 4 p.m. at the Scottville office, 302 N. Main St.

Order Lunch In

You can order your lunch in on Friday, Feb. 27 by calling Tabernacle A.M.E. Church at 231-745-4566 in advance. To order on Feb. 27, call 231-745-4891. Offered will be baked or fried chicken and sides including a drink and dessert. This is a fundraiser to help pay for a new furnace.

Lake County Historical Society

The Lake County Historical Society Historical Museum Room is open Friday afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m., or by appointment by calling (231) 898-2194. Museum exhibits include logging, one-room schools and a 1940s Northwoods hunting cabin. Lobby displays can be viewed Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 830 N. Michigan Ave. in Baldwin.

Fish Fry

The Lake County Knights will host a Fish Fry on Friday, Feb. 20 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at St. Ann’s Senior Center (behind St. Ann’s Church). Take outs are available. The dinners will be available each Friday through April 3, 2015.

Fish Fry

Peacock VFW Post 5315 will host a Fish Fry every Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. until April 3. Choices available are, chicken, shrimp and fish. World War II vets eat free. Take outs are available. Call 231-745-2134

Sports Boosters Auction

The Pine River Sports Boosters Auction will be held on Saturday, Feb. 28 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Lions Hall in Luther.

Gospel Jamboree

The Original Gospel Jamboree will take place on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Amazing Grace Acres Church, corner of M-37 and Woodland Dr., south of Baldwin. Potluck is at 6:30 and music is at 7 p.m. Featured this time will be Narrow Road and the Faith Gospel Team. Everyone is welcome.

A Look Ahead

Stehouwer Free Clinic

Free limited health care services are available in Cadillac for residents of Wexford, Missaukee and parts of Osceola and Lake counties with low income and no health insurance. Weekly health clinics are scheduled based on availability of volunteer health care providers. New patients need to call 231-876-6150 for an eligibility appointment, which are held Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

Office hours are Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (closed noon to 1 p.m.).

Story Hour

Luther Library hosts Story Hour on Monday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. All ages are welcome.


Parents and children ages birth to 5 years are invited to join the Baldwin Playgroup, meeting each Monday at the Baldwin Elementary Library from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. Playgroup is designed to build on the strengths of families as creative ideas to help children build their skills are shared with parents. Summers Senior Center

The Henrietta Summers Senior Center, located at 723 E. Lansing St. in historical Idlewild, is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bingo 11:30 a.m. to 12 noon, lunch 12 to 1 p.m., board games, Wii bowling, dominoes, card games and other activities are available. Narcotics Anonymous to Meet

The 60th Annual Ludington Optimist Youth Chess Tournament will take place at the Ludington High School Cafeteria, 508 N. Electronics Recycling

Electronics can be recycled on Saturday, March 7 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Luther Village Hall, 301 State St. This service is available to anyone from any where. They cannot accept Cathode ray TV’s.

Lake County Sportsmans Club to Meet

The Lake County Sportsmans Club will meet on the first Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. and on the second Thursday at 7 p.m. The Thursday meeting is a Board meeting, but members are welcome to attend. Grief Support Group Meets

A Hospice of Michigan grief support group meets the second Monday of each month from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Briny Building office suites conference room, 50 Filer Street, Suite 210, in Manistee. FREE Family Fun Event

A Family Affair featuring reading and games will be held at Mason County Central High School, 210 W. Broadway, (Scottville) on Saturday, March 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Mason County Children’s Trust Fund, Mason County Central Schools and Lake, Mason, Newaygo and Oceana Departments of Human Services.

Volunteers Needed

C.O.V.E. (Communities Overcoming Violent Encounters), formerly known as Region Four Community Services (The Women’s Shelter) is seeking a group of People willing to share some of their free time. A training will be held for those interested in assisting staff in answering the crisis line and/or being a receptionist. Hospice of Michigan Sesame Street Package

Hospice of Michigan is pleased to offer the Sesame Street program titled When Families Grieve through the Pathfinder Public Library in Baldwin. The kits are bilingual (English and Spanish) and include two booklets and a DVD. Particularly designed to help children grieve, the kit also is to help patients and families sort through complex emotions, remember the life of a loved one, and find strength in one another.
