Idlewild African American History event

In celebration of Black History month, Percy Davis will speak at the Henrietta Summers Senior Center, 723 E. Lansing Blvd., Idlewild on Friday, Feb. 10 at noon. Mr. Davis has many pictures and memories of the area.

Indoor Yard and Bake Sale

The V.F.W. Post 5315 Auxiliary will host an Indoor Yard and Bake Sale on Saturday, Feb. 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. To rent a table, call Bonnie at (231) 745-4010 (days) or (231) 745-7047 (evenings). The V.F.W. is located 4 miles north of Baldwin on M-37.

A Look Ahead

Grief Support Group to meet

A Hospice of Michigan grief support group meets the second Monday of each month from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Briny Building office suites conference room, 50 Filer St., Ste. 210 in Manistee. The group is open to anyone who is grieving a loss. There is no charge to participate. The next meeting is Monday, Feb. 13. Dems to meet

The Lake County Democratic Party will meet every month through November 2012 at the Hollister Senior Center, 1505 Michigan Ave., in Baldwin. The next meeting will be Monday, Feb. 13 at 5 p.m. New members are welcome.

AMVETS to meet

The monthly meeting of AMVETS Post No. 1988 will be held on Monday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Post at 1959 W. 24th St. in Baldwin.

Troutarama meeting

There will be a Troutarama planning meeting Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012 at 5:15 p.m. at the Baldwin Business Center. All committee members, event chairpersons, volunteers, and interested community members are cordially invited to attend. Also any written suggestions for this years festival can be submitted at the Wenger Insurance office. This will be the 56th Annual Troutarama. Dates for Troutarama 2012 are July 18-22.

Baldwin Lions to meet

The Baldwin Lions Club meets on the second Tuesday of the month at Hollister Senior Center. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. The Baldwin Lions Club provides eyeglasses and hearing aids for local residents. For more information call 231-745-4524.

Parkinson’s Support Group

Anyone that has Parkinson’s Disease or their caregivers are invited to come to our Mason-Lake County Parkinson’s Support Group meetings which are held on the third Wednesday of the month at 10 a.m. at the Mason County Senior Center, 140 Main St., Scottville.The next meeting will be Wednesday, Feb. 15. Chili Feed at Big M

The Spirit of the Woods Chapter of the North Country trail Association will host a FREE Chili feed after skiing or snowshoeing at the Big M cross country ski trails outside Wellston. Snowmobile Class

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office is hosting a snowmobile safety class on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Reed City. Blessing vendor meetings

Blessing of the Bikes Vendor Meetings will be held on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Ann’s Church and Sunday, March 4 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Ann’s Church. Potential vendors must be a non-profit and a Chamber of Commerce member. This year’s Blessing will be Sunday, May 20,2012.

Grief Support Group to meet

A Hospice of Michigan grief support group meets the third Monday of each month from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Hollister Senior Citizens Center, 1505 Michigan in Baldwin.

These services are provided to anyone who is mourning the loss of a loved one, whether or not the person was a hospice patient. Hospice of Michigan Grief Support programs are available free of charge.

Republicans to meet

The Lake County Republicans will meet on Monday, Feb. 20 in the basement of the Baldwin Business Center. The potluck is at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting is at 6:30 p.m.

Grandparents Support Group meets

Lake County Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Family Health Care Loretta Adams-Ashby Health Center located at 1101 Washington Ave. Light dinner and childcare provided. For more information call (231) 745-2000.

The Finance meeting for the Lake County Board of Commissioners will take place Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 9:30 a.m. at the Lake County Court house.

Commission meetings

The Lake County Board of Commissioners will meet Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 10:30 a.m. in the Commissioners Room at the Lake County Courthouse. (They meet the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month).

Volunteers needed

C.O.V.E. (Communities Overcoming Violent Encounters), formerly known as Region Four Community Services (The Women’s Shelter) is seeking a group of people willing to share some of their free time. A training will be held for those interested in assisting staff in answering the crisis line and/or being a receptionist. If you are willing to donate a few hours of your time, please contact Marie at (231) 843-2541.

Items needed for the shelter include: curtains, diapers (infant to size 5), Feminine products (pads & tampons), and socks.

Women’s Support Group is every Thursday at the United Methodist Church between FiveCAP, Inc., and MI Works beginning at 1 p.m. Volunteers are needed for child care during these meeting times. For more information contact Chrystal at (231) 843-2541 ext. 28.

Habitat needs volunteers

Volunteers are needed for the Habitat Restore. Some lifting also required. Please call (231) 745-2688 to volunteer your time to a Christian organization. Household items in working order are also needed.

Hospice of Michigan Sesame Street Package

Hospice of Michigan is pleased to offer the Sesame Street program titled When Families Grieve through the Pathfinder Library, in Baldwin. The kits are bilingual (English and Spanish) and include two booklets and a DVD. Particularly designed to help children grieve, the kit also is to help patients and families sort through complex emotions, remember the life of a loved one, and find strength in one another.

Immunization Clinics - Available by appointment only at (231) 745-4663. NOTE: As of Jan. 1, 2004 immunization fees were increased (Medicaid accepted). Expanded hours are available as scheduled by appointment.

MI-Child Program - Children ages 0-19 years of age health insurance coverage. Applications are available. Breast and Cervical Clinic Schedule - By appointment only. Call 1-800-968-7300 to schedule.

Hearing and Vision Testing - By appointment only. Call (231) 745-4663. Hearing and vision is offered free of charge for preschool and school age children by appointment.

Children’s Special Health Care Services - The Children?s Special Health Care Services - assessments, referrals, diagnostic evaluations, and coordination for medically eligible children. Call (231) 745-4663 for information.

Environmental Health Division - Questions regarding environmental programs, permits, and fees can be addressed in the mornings between 8-10 a.m. with a sanitarian. Applications for permits can be obtained by mail or at the health department from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. As of Jan. 1, 2004 Environmental Health Fees were increased. PLEASE call the health department at (231) 745-4663 for new fee schedule.

W.I.C. Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children - Complete nutrition program for pregnant or breast-feeding women, infants and children under five years of age. Program provides individual nutrition assessment that includes counseling, a monthly food package, breast-feeding information/support and referrals for other services as needed.
