VFW Auxiliary to meet The Peacock Post No. 5315 Ladies Auxiliary will meet on Thursday, Jan. 12.   This Weekend Dinner, Bake and Craft Sales Amvets Post No. 1988 Ladies Auxiliary will host a Dinner, Baked Goods and Craft Sale on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012 beginning at 12 p.,m. (noon). Featured for the dinner, beginning at 2 p.m., will be beef pasties. Wild Bill Karaoke will start at 8 p.m.  
 A LOOK AHEAD:   Martin Luther King celebration The Baldwin area Martin Luther King celebration will take place on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012 at Baldwin Community Schools High School gymnasium. Dinner will be served at 1 p.m. with the program to start at 2:45 p.m. The Keynote address will be given by Pastor Joe Washington.   Republicans to meet The Lake County Republicans will meet on Monday, Jan. 16 in the basement of the Baldwin Business Center. The potluck is at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting is at 6:30 p.m.   Grief Support Group to meet A Hospice of Michigan grief support group meets the third Monday of each month from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Hollister Senior Citizens Center, 1505 Michigan in Baldwin. These services are provided to anyone who is mourning the loss of a loved one, whether or not the person was a hospice patient. Hospice of Michigan Grief Support programs are available free of charge. The next meeting is Monday, Jan. 16. For more information call Lester at (231) 898-2490.   Trail Event The Spirit of the Woods Chapter of the North Country Trail Association will host a hike, snowshoe, or ski event at Pine Valley Pathway near Luther on Saturday, Jan 21, 2012, beginning at 10 a.m. Pine Valleys is between Baldwin and M55 on M37. It is 17 miles north of Baldwin and 9 miles south of M55, then east on 7 Mile Rd. 2/10 mile to the parking lot. For more information call (231) 845-0321 or 1-800-839-8185.   Fresh Food Giveaway Grace Mobile Pantry, together with Feeding America Food Bank will provide free fresh food on the fourth Tuesday of every month at 12 p.m. (noon), until gone. Food will be distributed in the parking lot Jackie Ryscamp Pavilion, 15580 Star Lake Dr., Baldwin, on Tuesday, Jan. 24. If you are income eligible, have children in need, or have a temporary distress situation, you may come and fill out your complete information on the day of the distribution. Sponsors are needed.   Troutarama dates The dates for Troutarama 2012 will be July 18 through July 22, 2012.   Volunteers needed C.O.V.E. (Communities Overcoming Violent Encounters), formerly known as Region Four Community Services (The Women’s Shelter) is seeking a group of people willing to share some of their free time. A training will be held for those interested in assisting staff in answering the crisis line and/or being a receptionist. Items needed for the shelter include: curtains, diapers (infants to size five), feminine products (pads and tampons), and socks . Household items in working order are also needed.   Hospice of Michigan Sesame Street Package Hospice of Michigan is pleased to offer the Sesame Street program titled When Families Grieve through the Pathfinder Library, in Baldwin. The kits are bilingual (English and Spanish) and include two booklets and a DVD. There is no excuse for abuse.   Department Veterans Service Officer Ray Moore, Department Veterans Service officer, the American Legion, Michigan, accredited representative for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, will be available to assist veterans, their dependents, and survivors with claims before the VA at the Newaygo County Veteran Services, 1137 Wilcox, in White Cloud, the second and fourth Monday, of each month, from 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. It is not necessary to be a member of The American Legion to receive any assistance. Call the center anytime to set up an appointment or verify availability.   Women’s Shelter volunteers The Women’s Shelter in Ludington needs volunteers to staff the 24-hour crisis line and shelter. Volunteers must be trained, but must possess basic communication skills and have well established boundaries. Call (231)843-2541 for an interview if you would like to make a difference in the lives of those in need.   Community Thrift Center The Community Thrift Center at 10th and Maple streets in Baldwin, south of the Courthouse, has clean clothing, household articles, and some furniture.The Center hours are Mondays through Fridays, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. All donations of good used articles are welcome during hours the shop is open, ifpossible. All proceeds benefit the community.   A.A. meetings A. A. will meet Mondays, at 8 p.m., at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Baldwin and Saturdays at 8 p.m. at the Baldwin Congregational Church, on the corner of 8th and Beech streets.
